Medicinal cannabis research continues to span an increasingly diverse range of conditions. These latest studies examine real-world adverse event data, patient-reported outcomes and early laboratory findings across epilepsy, anxiety, Alzheimer’s disease and glioblastoma.
Drawing on seven randomised controlled trials (1,154 participants), this systematic review evaluated CBD as an adjunct treatment for drug-resistant epilepsy. Findings suggest oral CBD was associated with reduced seizure frequency across hard-to-treat epilepsy types, with 20mg/kg per day producing the most consistent results. Side effects were generally mild, though elevated liver enzymes and drowsiness occurred more frequently in patients taking certain concomitant medications. The authors note that alternative formulations, including liposomal and transdermal, showed more variable results and require further investigation.
Analysing 614 TGA adverse event reports submitted between mid-2022 and 2025, this retrospective study found that mood and mental health-related events, including anxiety, psychosis and paranoia, were the most frequently reported side effects of medicinal cannabis.
Higher- THC products accounted for more than half of all reports, coinciding with an increase in prescriptions for inhaled, higher-strength THC products. The authors highlight the importance of patient screening and ongoing monitoring.

The findings suggest that quality of life may be an important consideration alongside symptom change when evaluating treatment outcomes.
Using an in vitro model, researchers investigated whether whole cannabis flower extracts could block key enzymes associated with Alzheimer’s disease progression. The extracts showed enzyme-blocking activity and appeared to protect cells under Alzheimer’s-like conditions. The findings add to preclinical research on whole cannabis extracts, though results remain limited to laboratory models and require further investigation.
